Reasons to use the Xbox 360 as a media center
Tue, 16 Sep 2008 10:17 PM

Reader Happymus asked a question yesterday:

"What's the point of using the Xbox if I can listen to music and watch videos from my computer already? Why do I still need to fiddle around and use the Xbox?"

I think that's a great question because it's a question I asked myself, too, in the beginning. Haha. So, I’m going to answer the question today.

In fact, let’s do one better. Let’s ask the Xbox himself! LOL.

Let’s ask Aristotle.

He’s gone and dozed off again from listening to Michael Bublé.

Let’s wake him up!

“WAKEY WAKEY, Aristotle!”

“Fmmmph?”

“Your girlfriend has run off with another console!!”

“WHAT??!!”

“Wait a minute… I don’t have a girlfriend!”

ROFL.

“What kind of lousy owner are you??!!”

“I have a question for you, Aristotle. Why should we play music and videos through you when we can do it on the computer anyway?”

“Isn’t it obvious? The answer is because I’m cool and I’m cute and you should spend all your time with me and throw your computer away because I’m the coolest and funnest machine in the world!”

“Um…”

I think I’d better answer it myself.

So.

Why should we use the Xbox 360 as a Media Center?

The main reason is that you want to use your home entertainment system to play all your media for better enjoyment.

For instance, most people probably have better sound systems hooked up with their TV than for their computers, so it makes a lot of sense to play music off those sound systems than off default computer speakers.

Since your Xbox 360 is already hooked to your TV, and it has the ability to stream files wirelessly off your PC, why not make full use of it?

Here are a few real-life examples why you’d want to use your Xbox 360 as a media center:

  1. You’re having a party in your living room and you want to play music. But your music is all stored on your PC, which is in your study room. So why not connect your Xbox 360 to your PC wirelessly and you can grab any songs you want off your PC and play it off your home entertainment unit in your living room?
  2.

  3. You have videos and movies in digital format in your PC, but you don’t want to watch movies at your desk and off your gimpy 21” monitor. You want to be seated on your couch, watching movies off your 42” plasma TV! The Xbox 360 can grab your videos and movies from your PC easily!
  4.

  5. You’ve invited a few friends over and you want to show off your latest vacation photos. Instead of getting them to crowd around your PC, why not play a photo slideshow on your TV? Then everyone can chill out in the den while your photos play in a loop. Your Xbox 360 can even stream music at the same time it’s showing off your photos!
  6.

  7. Some Xbox 360 games, such as Project Gotham Racing, allow you to play your own songs inside the game. So it’s really helpful that the Xbox 360 can pick up songs in your PC.

If you play around with it more, you’ll slowly find your own reasons and real-life situations in which to use your Xbox 360 for all-purpose home entertainment.

Of course, not everyone will find it really necessary, but it’s a choice available for those who know how to enjoy it.

And your Xbox 360 will love you for spending more time with it!

Right, Aristotle?

“Yeah, whatever, can we play now?”

lol, what's with the alarm clock questions? Well, if you have a naughty Xbox like mine, maybe it'll work. Haha.
